Love & Marriage Shrines
Shrines dedicated to en-musubi (縁結び) — the tying of bonds between people. Whether you are seeking a partner, nurturing an existing relationship, or praying for a happy marriage, these shrines are Japan's most visited for affairs of the heart.
What is En-musubi?
En-musubi (縁結び) literally means "tying a bond" or "creating connections." In Shinto belief, en refers to the invisible threads of fate that connect people — in romance, friendship, business, and family. Shrines that enshrine deities associated with these connections are traditionally visited for prayers related to love and marriage.
The deity most commonly associated with en-musubi is Ōkuninushi-no-Mikoto, enshrined at Izumo Grand Shrine — considered Japan's foremost shrine for matchmaking prayers. Many shrines also sell enmusubi ema (votive tablets for love) and red thread charms symbolizing the connection between partners.
