Shimogamo Shrine
Shimogamo Shrine
ภาพรวม
Shimogamo Shrine (formally Kamo-mioya Jinja) is the lower of the two ancient Kamo shrines in Kyoto. It enshrines the mother (Tamayorihime) and grandfather (Kamotaketsunumi) of the deity worshipped at Kamigamo Shrine, reflecting the family relationship between the two shrines. The shrine is embraced by the Tadasuno-Mori, a primeval forest covering about 12 hectares where the Takano and Kamo rivers converge. This ancient woodland, with trees estimated to be 200-600 years old, is one of Kyoto's most enchanting natural spaces and an integral part of the World Heritage designation. Both the east and west main halls are National Treasures, and the shrine plays a central role in the Aoi Matsuri alongside Kamigamo Shrine.
