Hakusan Shrine (Niigata) is the sōchinjusha — the paramount guardian shrine — of Niigata City, enshrining Kukurihime no Okami, a deity of matchmaking and purification closely associated with the Hakusan mountain deity tradition. Though exact founding details were lost to fires, tradition places its origins in the Engi era (901–923 CE). The shrine is one of approximately 350 Beppyo Jinja (specially designated shrines by the Association of Shinto Shrines), granting it the highest institutional prestige among Niigata shrines. During the Meiji era, eleven neighboring shrines were merged into its precincts. Located in central Niigata, it serves as the spiritual heart of the city and draws large crowds for New Year hatsumode observances.
