椿大神社
Oasahiko Shrine
The ichinomiya of Awa Province, located near the famous Naruto whirlpools. The shrine sits in a serene forest at the base of Mt. Oasa and is the most popular New Year pilgrimage destination in Tokushima Prefecture. A German-built bridge and memorial on the grounds commemorate WWI prisoners of war who were housed nearby and built structures for the shrine.
A stone bridge in the shrine grounds was built by German WWI prisoners of war who were housed in the nearby Bando POW camp — the same camp famous for the first Japanese performance of Beethoven's 9th Symphony.
