À propos

Sarutahiko is described as a towering, fearsome figure who stood at the junction between heaven and earth when Ninigi descended to the terrestrial realm. His blazing nose and luminous eyes illuminated the path, and even the heavenly deities were initially intimidated by his presence. It was the goddess Amenouzume who boldly approached him and learned that he had come to guide the heavenly grandson to his destination.

As the leader (or representative) of the earthly deities (kunitsukami), Sarutahiko's willingness to guide Ninigi symbolizes the peaceful reception of heavenly authority by the indigenous powers. After fulfilling his role, Sarutahiko returned to Ise, where he is said to have made his home at Isuzu River.

Sarutahiko is widely venerated as a deity of guidance, path-opening, and the removal of obstacles. His cult is especially prominent at Sarutahiko Shrine in Ise, and he is frequently invoked at the head of processions and festivals as a harbinger clearing the way forward.
