À propos

Tagorihime is one of the three Munakata goddesses born from the ukehi ritual between Amaterasu and Susanoo. She is enshrined at Okitsumiya on the remote island of Okinoshima, the most sacred of the three Munakata shrine locations, where for centuries only authorized priests could set foot.

The island of Okinoshima, where she presides, has yielded approximately 80,000 votive offerings from the fourth through ninth centuries, providing an unparalleled archaeological record of ancient Japanese maritime worship. Everything on the island is considered sacred and nothing may be removed.

As the goddess of the most distant and inaccessible shrine, Tagorihime represents the deepest mysteries of the sea and the farthest reach of divine protection for those who venture across open waters.
