Takeda Shingen (1521–1573) was the daimyo of Kai Province (Yamanashi) and one of the most renowned military commanders of the Sengoku period. He is best known for his rivalry with Uesugi Kenshin (five battles at Kawanakajima). His battle standard bore the famous quote from Sun Tzu: 'Swift as the wind, quiet as the forest, fierce as fire, immovable as the mountain' (Furinkazan). He died of illness before he could advance to Kyoto. He is enshrined at Takeda Jinja in Kofu (Yamanashi).
