Vue d'ensemble

Sumiyoshi Taisha is the head of approximately 2,300 Sumiyoshi shrines across Japan and one of the most important shrines in the Kansai region. Its four main halls, all National Treasures, are arranged in a unique configuration: three in a row pointing toward the sea (representing a fleet of ships) with the fourth alongside. This 'sumiyoshi-zukuri' architectural style is one of the oldest forms of shrine architecture. The shrine is intimately connected with the sea, as the three Sumiyoshi deities (the Tsutsu-no-o brothers) were born from the purification of Izanagi after his return from the underworld. They have been worshipped as protectors of seafarers since ancient times. The iconic arched Taikobashi (drum bridge) at the entrance is one of Osaka's most photographed structures. During New Year, Sumiyoshi Taisha is the most visited shrine in the Kansai region.
