Sumiyoshi Shrine in Fukuoka is one of Japan's Three Great Sumiyoshi Shrines and the ichinomiya of Chikuzen Province, located within walking distance of Hakata Station. It enshrines the Sumiyoshi Sanjin — the three sea-guardian deities — and is said to be the most ancient of all Sumiyoshi shrines, predating even the Sumiyoshi Taisha in Osaka. The shrine is revered for maritime safety and is also historically associated with sumo wrestling.
