Ishizuchi Shrine
The shrine complex spans from the base town of Saijo to the summit of Mt. Ishizuchi (1,982m), the tallest peak in western Japan and one of the Seven Holy Mountains. The mountain has been a center for yamabushi ascetic practices for over 1,300 years. Chain climbing routes on the cliff face challenge brave pilgrims.
Three sets of iron chains on the mountain's cliff face allow pilgrims to climb nearly vertical rock walls to reach the summit shrine.
