Vue d'ensemble

The Outer Shrine (Geku) of Ise Jingu enshrines Toyouke-no-Omikami, the deity who provides sacred food to Amaterasu. According to tradition, Amaterasu herself requested that Toyouke be brought from Tanba Province to serve as her provider. The Geku thus plays an essential complementary role to the Naiku. Like the Naiku, Geku undergoes the Shikinen Sengu rebuilding every 20 years. The shrine is more accessible, located just a short walk from Ise's main station, and tradition dictates that pilgrims should visit Geku before proceeding to Naiku. Twice daily, sacred food offerings (Higoto Asayu Omikesai) are prepared and presented to Amaterasu at this shrine, a ritual that has continued unbroken for over 1,500 years.
