Yaizu Shrine in Yaizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, enshrines Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, the legendary imperial prince who, according to the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, narrowly escaped death here when enemies set fire to a grassy plain during his eastern campaign. He used his sacred sword Kusanagi to cut the grass and set a counter-fire, and this dramatic event gave the place the name "Yakitsu" (焼津, "burned crossing"), which became the city's name. Traditionally founded in 409 CE, the shrine is listed in the Engishiki (927 CE) and serves as a spiritual home for the maritime traditions of Yaizu's fishing community.
