Wakasa Hiko Jinja in Obama, Fukui Prefecture, is the ichinomiya (chief shrine) of the ancient Wakasa Province. The upper shrine (Kami-sha), enshrining the sea deity Wakasa Hiko-no-Mikoto, is first documented in the Nihon Shoki (720 CE) and features a solemn primeval forest setting. The lower shrine (Shimo-sha) was established in 714 CE. The shrine played a vital role in the "Wakasa road" that supplied seafood and salt to the ancient capital Nara.
