Takemizuwake Shrine in Chikuma, Nagano Prefecture, enshrines Takemizuwake-no-Mikoto, a deity of water, and is listed in the 927 CE Engishiki as a Myojin-taisha of Shinano Province. The shrine first appears in historical records in 866 CE, when it received an extraordinary imperial rank promotion. With over 1,100 documented years of sacred tradition, it has served as a spiritual center for agricultural rites and flood-control prayers along the Chikuma River basin, and was granted tax-exempt land by the Edo shogunate in 1648.
