Osaki Hachimangu possesses one of the finest examples of Momoyama-period shrine architecture in Japan, designated a National Treasure. Built by Date Masamune, the lord of Sendai famous for his one-eyed visage, the main hall is lavishly decorated with gold leaf, lacquer, and elaborate carvings. The shrine's annual Dontosai festival on January 14 is one of the largest winter fire festivals in Tohoku, where participants strip down to loincloths and carry offerings through the cold night to be burned in a great bonfire at the shrine.
