Kasugayama Shrine was established in 1901 at the foot of Mount Kasugayama in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, to enshrine the spirit of Uesugi Kenshin (1530–1578), the legendary Sengoku warlord known as the "Dragon of Echigo." The shrine occupies the site of Kenshin's former administrative compound below Kasugayama Castle — the primary stronghold of the Uesugi clan — and was created through the efforts of former Takada Domain samurai Ogawa Sumiharu with support from Baron Maejima Hisoka (founder of Japan's modern postal system). Its treasure hall displays documents and artifacts associated with Kenshin's military campaigns and governance of the Echigo domain.
