Ishikawa Gokoku Shrine was established on December 15, 1870, by Maeda Yoshiyasu, 14th lord of Kaga Domain, to honor 107 soldiers who died fighting in the Boshin War. Originally a shokonsha (spirit-summoning shrine) on Mount Utatsu, it was relocated in 1935 to a spacious site adjacent to Kenrokuen Garden on the former Imperial Army drill grounds, and renamed to its present designation in 1939. The shrine today enshrines 44,832 spirits from Ishikawa Prefecture who gave their lives in Japan's modern conflicts.
