Hirose Taisha in Kawai-cho, Nara Prefecture, stands at the ancient confluence of rivers forming the Yamato River system, a site venerated since at least 675 CE as the dwelling of Wakaukanome-no-Mikoto, a goddess of water, pure harvests, and food. The Nihon Shoki records that Emperor Tenmu in 675 CE instituted formal imperial rituals here in tandem with Tatsuta Taisha, establishing the two shrines as a paired set governing water and wind for agricultural prosperity and national stability. Hirose Taisha holds the rank of Meishin-taisha in the Engishiki and is listed among the prestigious Nijunisha — the 22 shrines that received imperial offerings for critical matters of state throughout the Heian period.
