Akiha Jinja, founded on the summit of Mount Akiha in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, is Japan's most celebrated fire-prevention shrine, with a history traditionally traced to 709 CE. Enshrining Hi-no-Musubi-no-Kami, the deity of fire, it is said that the shrine gave its name to Tokyo's Akihabara district (via a branch shrine's fire-prevention prayer). The shrine has approximately 800 branch shrines nationwide. The mountain setting at 866 meters offers stunning views of the Enshu plain and the Pacific Ocean.
