Aichi Gokoku Shrine, located within the outer moat precincts of Nagoya Castle, is Aichi Prefecture's principal war memorial shrine enshrining over 93,000 spirits of prefectural war dead from the Boshin War (1868–69) through the end of World War II. It was established in 1868 by Owari Domain lord Tokugawa Yoshikatsu to honor 25 fallen domain warriors, with the formal Seichusha shrine built in May 1869. The shrine was renamed Shokonsha in 1875, received official government designation in 1901, and took its present name in 1939 after relocating to its current site in 1935.
