Shimazu Nariakira (1809–1858) was the twenty-eighth lord of Satsuma domain (Kagoshima) and one of the most enlightened daimyo of the late Edo period. He modernized Satsuma's industry, built reverberatory furnaces for cannon production, and developed Japan's first spinning mills. He mentored key figures of the Meiji Restoration, including Saigo Takamori. He is enshrined at Terukuni Jinja in Kagoshima.
