Kuroda Nagamasa (1568–1623) was the first lord of Fukuoka domain and son of the famous strategist Kuroda Yoshitaka (Kanbei). He fought under Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Korean campaigns and later allied with Tokugawa Ieyasu at the Battle of Sekigahara (1600), which secured his domain. He built Fukuoka Castle. Both he and his father are enshrined at Fukuoka Jinja (now Fukuoka Gokoku Jinja area).
