Kumano Sanjo Gongen (Three Kumano Deities)
Deities of rebirth, healing, the afterlife, and the sacred mountains of Kumano
เกี่ยวกับ
The Kumano faith centers on three main deities enshrined at the three Grand Shrines of Kumano (Kumano Sanzan): Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha. The principal deity of Hongu is Ketsumimiko no Okami (identified with Susanoo), Hayatama enshrines Hayatama no Okami (identified with Izanagi), and Nachi enshrines Fusumi no Okami (identified with Izanami).
The Kumano pilgrimage, traversing ancient mountain paths through the Kii Peninsula, became one of Japan's most important devotional practices from the Heian period onward. Emperors, aristocrats, and commoners alike undertook the arduous journey, which was understood as a symbolic death and rebirth—pilgrims left the profane world behind and entered the Pure Land manifest on earth.
The syncretic nature of Kumano worship is profound: the three deities were identified with Amida, Yakushi, and Thousand-Armed Kannon in the Buddhist framework, while retaining their Shinto identities. The Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes were registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.
