Emperor Juntoku (順徳天皇, 1197–1242) was the eighty-fourth emperor who participated in the Jokyu War (1221) alongside his father Retired Emperor Go-Toba in an attempt to overthrow the Kamakura shogunate. After the failure, he was exiled to Sado Island, where he died 22 years later. He was a noted poet and scholar of court customs, compiling the Kinpisho, a treatise on court ceremonies.
