Izanami is the female half of the primordial creative pair. Together with Izanagi, she gave birth to the Japanese islands and countless deities. Her creative role came to a tragic end when she was fatally burned giving birth to Kagutsuchi, the fire god, and descended to Yomi-no-kuni, the shadowy realm of the dead.

When Izanagi followed her to the underworld, Izanami asked him not to look upon her, having already partaken of the food of the dead. He broke this taboo and saw her corpse crawling with maggots and attended by thunder deities. Enraged and humiliated, Izanami sent the Ugly Females of Yomi and a host of warriors to pursue him. At the pass between worlds, the couple exchanged their final vows—of death and life respectively—establishing the cosmic balance between mortality and renewal.

Izanami's transformation from life-giver to death-ruler represents one of the most profound theological statements in early Japanese religion. Her domain over death is not malevolent but part of the natural order, and she continues to be venerated at shrines associated with both creation and passage to the afterlife.
