Takebe Taisha
Takebe Taisha is the ichinomiya of former Ōmi Province, located in Seta, Ōtsu City, Shiga Prefecture, on the western bank of the Seta River. It enshrines Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, the legendary warrior-hero of ancient Japan, alongside Ōkuninushi no Mikoto in the auxiliary shrine. Shrine tradition holds the deity was first enshrined at Chigusatake in Kanzaki District by Yamato Takeru's consort, then relocated to the present site in 675 CE (Tenmu 4) to serve as guardian of Ōmi Province. The shrine rose to national prominence after Minamoto no Yoritomo prayed here before his successful campaign against the Taira clan in the late 12th century, establishing its reputation as a shrine of victory and career advancement. The shrine received the highest Myōjin Taisha rank in the Engishiki, and served as the premier shrine of Ōmi Province throughout the classical and medieval periods. Today Takebe Taisha is revered for blessings of victory, career advancement, and overcoming adversity. Its most celebrated event is the Senkō Festival (August 17), during which a 1.5-tonne portable shrine is carried aboard a boat down the Seta River — one of the most distinctive water-based festivals in the region.
