Suitengu (Kurume)
Suitengu in Kurume, Fukuoka, is the head shrine of all Suitengu shrines in Japan — including the famous Suitengu in Tokyo's Nihonbashi district. Founded in 1190 in connection with the child Emperor Antoku, who perished at the Battle of Dan-no-Ura in the Genpei War, the shrine is the foremost place of worship in Japan for safe childbirth, child-rearing, and water safety. Ame-no-Minakanushi, the central deity of the cosmos in the Kojiki, is also enshrined here.
