Warriors from across Japanese history, including Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, dedicated their weapons here after battle. The island is now a popular stop on the famous Shimanami Kaido cycling route. Ancient camphor trees, some over 2,600 years old, tower over the grounds.
Kono clan, rulers of Iyo Province, rebuilt the shrine and dedicated weapons.
