Niigata Gokoku Shrine
Niigata Gokoku Jinja enshrines the spirits of approximately 73,000 war dead from Niigata Prefecture who fell from the Boshin War (1868) through the end of World War II. Established in 1869 by imperial order as a shokon-sha (spirit-inviting shrine), it was elevated to the gokoku-jinja designation in 1939. The serene precincts in central Niigata serve as a place of remembrance and peace.
