Kunouzan Toshogu
Kunouzan Toshogu is the original shrine built to enshrine Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of Japan's last feudal government. Constructed in 1617 on the cliffs of Mount Kuno overlooking Suruga Bay, it predates the more famous Nikko Toshogu. The main hall, designated a National Treasure, showcases the ornate 'gongen-zukuri' architectural style in brilliant colors that have been meticulously restored. The shrine is accessible via a scenic ropeway from the Nihondaira plateau, offering spectacular views of Mount Fuji and the Pacific Ocean.
