Itakiso Shrine in Wakayama City enshrines Isotakeru-no-Mikoto (also called Itakeru-no-Mikoto), the deity of trees and forestry who, according to tradition, planted heavenly tree seeds across Japan before descending to Kii Province — earning him the title "meritorious deity of the land." Listed in the Engishiki (927 CE) as a Meishin-taisha, it is one of three ichinomiya of Kii Province alongside Niutsuhime Shrine and Asuka Shrine. The earliest written record dates to 702 CE in the Shoku Nihongi, and the shrine was relocated to its current site in 713 CE.
