Ikushima Tarushima Jinja in Suwa, Nagano Prefecture, occupies a sacred island (shimajima) in Lake Suwa and is regarded as the ninomiya (second shrine) of Shinano Province. The shrine enshrines Ikushima-no-Kami and Tarushima-no-Kami, ancient deities of life and vitality. Historical documents from the Sanada clan (Sengoku period) reference the shrine, and its beautiful island setting amid Lake Suwa has made it a revered landmark.
