Nukisaki Shrine
The ichinomiya of Kozuke Province is architecturally unique: worshippers ascend to the main gate, then descend steps to reach the main hall below, making it one of Japan's three 'kudari-miya' (descending shrines). The deity Hime Okami was especially revered in Tomioka for her connection to silk farming and weaving.
It is one of only three 'descending shrines' in Japan, where you go down stairs to reach the main hall — the opposite of normal shrine architecture.
