Hiraoka Shrine
Hiraoka Shrine is the ichinomiya of former Kawachi Province, situated on the western slope of Mount Ikoma in Higashiōsaka, Osaka Prefecture. It enshrines four deities: Ame-no-Koyane no Mikoto (ancestor deity of the Fujiwara clan), his consort Hime-gami, Futsunushi no Mikoto, and Takemikazuchi no Mikoto. According to shrine tradition, the first two deities were originally enshrined on the summit of Kōzudake before being moved to the current site in 650 CE (Hakuchi 1). The shrine is known as "Moto-Kasuga" (original Kasuga) because the deities of Kasuga Taisha in Nara were transferred from here when that great shrine was founded in 768 CE. The shrine is listed among the Nijūnisha (Twenty-two Shrines under imperial sponsorship), confirming its high standing. The present main hall, built in 1826 in the "Kasuga four-bay" Hiraoka-zukuri style, is a designated Tangible Cultural Property. The shrine's two annual festivals — the Kayu-uri Shinto ritual and the Shimenawa-kake ceremony — are both designated National Intangible Folk Cultural Properties. Hiraoka Shrine remains the spiritual heart of eastern Osaka, with its wooded precinct offering a tranquil refuge from the city.
