Hida Ichinomiya Minashi Shrine

Hida-Ichinomiya Minashi Jinja is the ichinomiya of former Hida Province, located in Ichinomiya-chō, Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. It enshrines fifteen deities collectively called Minashi-no-Ōkami, with the sacred Mount Kurayama (1,529 m) to the southwest venerated as the shrine's shintai (divine body). The shrine is regarded as the land spirit and ancestral guardian of Hida Province, and its presiding deity is considered the kunitama (spirit of the land). Though its exact founding is unknown, records from the reign of Emperor Seiwa (850s–880s) confirm the shrine already held a court rank. The Engishiki lists it among Hida Province's shrines. During the medieval period it was styled Minashi Daibosatsu and administered by Buddhist monks before reverting to Shinto administration in the Edo period. The shrine's signature annual ritual is the Ikinina Festival (April 3), where nine young women from across Hida serve as "living dolls" (ikinina-sama) to pray for agricultural prosperity and women's happiness. The May festival includes the ceremonial serving of locally brewed doburoku rice wine, and the shrine houses several Gifu Prefecture-designated cultural properties.
