Vue d'ensemble

Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha is the head of over 1,300 Sengen and Asama shrines throughout Japan, all dedicated to the worship of Mount Fuji. The shrine stands at the southwestern base of Mount Fuji and uniquely holds legal ownership of the mountain's summit from the eighth station upward. The principal deity, Konohanasakuya-hime, is revered as the goddess of Mount Fuji and the deity of safe childbirth and fire prevention. According to myth, she proved her fidelity by entering a burning birthing hut and emerging unharmed. The striking two-story main hall, donated by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1604, is a rare example of 'sengen-zukuri' architecture and is designated an Important Cultural Property. The Wakutama-ike spring pond within the precincts, fed by Mount Fuji's snowmelt filtered through volcanic rock, is a designated Special Natural Monument.
