Chokaisan Omonoimi Shrine
Chokaisan Omonoimi Shrine is the ichinomiya of ancient Dewa Province, spread across the slopes and summit of Mount Chokai, the highest peak in the Tohoku region at 2,236 meters. The shrine embodies the deep tradition of mountain worship (sangaku shinko) that characterizes Japanese religiosity in the northeast. The shrine complex consists of multiple sites: the summit honsha, and two kuchinomiya (trailhead shrines) at Fukura and Kamoinobo. The summit can only be reached by a substantial mountain hike during the brief summer season. Mount Chokai was an active volcano throughout recorded history, and eruptions were traditionally interpreted as manifestations of the kami's displeasure, prompting court rituals to appease the deity.
