Date Masamune (1567–1636) was the daimyo of Oshu (northeastern Japan) and founder of the Sendai domain. Known as 'The One-Eyed Dragon' (he lost sight in his right eye to smallpox in childhood), he was one of the most ambitious warlords of the late Sengoku period, briefly controlling much of northeastern Japan before Toyotomi Hideyoshi curtailed his expansion.
He built Sendai Castle and developed the city of Sendai. He is enshrined at Ojika Jinja and Zuihoden (his mausoleum shrine) in Sendai. He is venerated as the founding patron of Sendai and the Tohoku region.
