About

Emperor Chuai (仲哀天皇) is recorded as the fourteenth emperor of Japan and the son of the legendary warrior Yamato Takeru. His consort was the redoubtable Empress Jingu, and together they are enshrined at major Hachiman and Sumiyoshi shrines across Japan.

According to the Nihon Shoki, the deity of Kashii (Kehi) revealed to Jingu that she would conquer the kingdoms of Korea. When Chuai refused to believe the oracle, the deity declared he would not live to see the foreign lands—and the emperor died shortly after, under circumstances the chronicles leave deliberately vague. Jingu then led the legendary Silla campaign while pregnant with the future Emperor Ojin.

Chuai's historical identity is uncertain; most modern historians consider him a legendary figure. His cult is strongest at Kehi Jingu in Tsuruga (Fukui) and Kashii-gu in Fukuoka, shrines where the imperial campaign tradition is locally commemorated.
