Overview

Togakushi Shrine is a complex of five interconnected shrines set deep in the mountains of northern Nagano. The shrines are associated with the Amano-Iwato cave myth, in which various deities worked to coax the sun goddess Amaterasu out of hiding. The deity at the innermost shrine, Ame-no-Tajikarao, is the god who pulled open the cave door. The approach to the Okusha (innermost shrine) passes through a breathtaking avenue of giant cryptomeria cedars, some over 400 years old, creating one of the most atmospheric shrine approaches in all of Japan.
