Overview

Munakata Taisha is a complex of three shrines stretching from the Kyushu mainland across islands to Okinoshima — a forbidden sacred island where women are still barred and even male visitors must strip naked and purify themselves in the sea before stepping ashore. The island yielded 80,000 ritual artifacts spanning 500 years, all designated National Treasures. In 2017, the site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
