Kumano Taisha in Shimane is considered the origin of fire in Japan and serves as the co-ichinomiya of Izumo Province alongside Izumo Taisha. The shrine is the spiritual counterpart to Izumo Taisha — while Izumo Taisha governs en-musubi (fate-bonds), Kumano Taisha is revered as the birthplace of fire-making rituals. An annual fire-striking ceremony (Kamiari-sai) renews the sacred fire used at Izumo Taisha.
