Possibly originated in 552 with a cave shrine. Minamoto no Yoritomo enshrined Benzaiten here in 1182. One of Japan's Three Great Benzaiten shrines. The shrine comprises three halls — Hetsu-no-Miya, Nakatsu-no-Miya, and Okutsu-no-Miya — spread across the island.
