Nigimitama (Gentle Spirit)

和御魂 (にぎみたま)

The gentle, harmonious, and nurturing aspect of a kami's spirit

Nigimitama is the gentle, peaceful, and nurturing dimension of a kami's spirit. In contrast to the aramitama (rough spirit), the nigimitama represents the kami's benevolent aspects — blessings of good harvest, peaceful community, health, and harmonious relationships. When people pray at shrines for well-being and prosperity, they are essentially invoking the nigimitama of the kami.

The nigimitama is associated with stability, growth, and the orderly functioning of both nature and human society. Good weather for crops, community harmony, and individual well-being are all manifestations of the nigimitama's influence. Shinto worship, through proper offerings, purification, and prayer, aims to maintain conditions that allow the kami's nigimitama to flourish.

Some theological frameworks expand the kami's spiritual dimensions beyond the basic aramitama/nigimitama pair to include sakimitama (the spirit of blessings and good fortune) and kushimitama (the spirit of mysterious transformative power). Together, these four aspects (ichirei-shikon, one spirit-four souls) describe the full complexity of a kami's nature.
